50 years ago today, the country was placed under Martial Law. The day that will forever taint our history with several atrocities, red-tagging of activists, human rights violations, and extreme government corruption.

The Union of Nation-builders and Innovators for Transparency, Empowerment, and Development (UNITED) will continue to remember the human rights violations and sufferings of the Filipino people under the brutal Marcos Regime. We must mourn for the Filipinos who were silenced for speaking up. Let us continue to uphold the truth and prevail against those who are attempting to propagate repression and exploitation.

FACT 5: EXTENSIVE HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

The nine-year military rule ordered by then President Ferdinand Marcos in 1972 unleashed a wave of crimes under international law and grave human rights violations, including tens of thousands of people arbitrarily arrested and detained, and thousands of others tortured, forcibly disappeared, and killed.

In an interview with the organization in 1975, President Marcos told Amnesty International that over 50,000 people had been arrested and detained under martial law from 1972-1975; those arrested included church workers, human rights defenders, legal aid lawyers, labour leaders and journalists.

Fifty years later, the spirit of resistance still lives on. Never forget. Never Again.
