Much has been claimed about what happened during Martial Law. Some of them, however, bear no truth.

As advocates for transparency, accountability and empowerment, UNITED for CIT University remains to be the voice of the oppressed. Part of our initiatives to actively support the 1081 Exhibit is to provide verified information and sources about the FACTS during the Marcos dictatorship and martial law.

We must all remember the facts of what many described as one of the darkest chapters in Philippine historyβ€” especially when disinformation and historical revisionism are rampant. We must move beyond politics and slogans to genuinely serve the people. Together let us uphold and promote the welfare of all.

FACT 1: THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE DECLARATION OF MARTIAL LAW IS ON SEPTEMBER 23 (NOT SEPTEMBER 21)

On September 21, 1972, President Ferdinand E. Marcos issued Proclamation No. 1081, declaring martial law in the Philippines.

The arbitrary date underlines that the implementation of martial law actually occurred on September 23, 1972, which was after Ferdinand Marcos' nationally televised statement, not the numerologically fortunate (for Marcos) 21st, when martial law was first declared. This is the first day of Marcos dictatorship.

On September 23, at 3 PM, Press Secretary Francisco Tatad read the contents of Proclamation No. 1081 on the radio. After the proclamation was read, Marcos went on the air at 7:15 PM to defend the country's severe crackdown on democratic institutions. General Order No. 1, s. 1972 was subsequently issued by Marcos, giving the President complete authority to rule via executive order.

In this age of information, ignorance is a choice. Be an information literate person now!
